project 8 of 33 : make a terrarium.

This project was so fun and easy! Terrariums are all over the Internet and Pinterest these days, and have sparked my interest for awhile now. So I made a trip to Home Depot and checked out some things. It's so simple you'd be amazed!

Supplies needed:
  • succulent & cactus potting soil
  • decorative stones
  • glass bowl of your choosing
  • succulents
The glass bowl cost more than everything else, so you could be really thrifty and use a current bowl/container you have in your home.  I ended up using two different glass containers, both bought at Target. A larger square one, and a narrow rectangular shaped. They both worked just fine.

What I did was used a large spoon to dish the potting soil into the glass. Placed the succulents in the middle, puting more potting soil around the succulent. Next I put the stones in, with these I found it best to place them by hand verses pouring them in to give it a layered look. With the soil being the first layer, stones being the second layer, and then the succulent. Voila, you have a homemade terrarium!
The tall square one is my favorite. I love how the succulent looks so fresh looking. I am a newbie when it comes to succulents, but have always been a fan of the way they look. Buying them for the first time, I have to say they are so so cheap. Now if I can just figure out how much water they need. Kev actually poured a little water in both of them last night, we'll see how it does for a few days.
I would encourage you to try one of these. Just Google terrarium's and a ton of them come up. You can make them as simple or complex as you want. I like the more simpler looks of these verses the complex ones. Some people put moss and a whole bunch of other things in them. You can buy a giant glass bowl and fill er up. I like to start easy and simple, and work up from there. Love having live plants in the house!
