project 6 of 33 : road map cork board.

Do you ever have random road maps lying around the house from previous vacation trips or maybe in your car? Well I did not lol But that didn't stop me from diving into this project. Introducing the road map cork board.

Supplies needed:
- scissors
- x-acto knife
- painters tape
- map of choice
- spray adhesive
- cork roll (found at Target)

The hardest part was rolling out the cork board and getting it to stay on the table without rolling up like wrapping paper. I put a long strip of painters tape down the middle of the two boards to sort of hold them together. Then used a hammer and some other heavy things to weigh it down for a little while. Meanwhile, I cut out the state of Ohio. I picked up a map of Ohio, Florida, and Michigan at the local AAA store. After opening the maps and checking out the size I went with Ohio. Cut out the whole state.
After the state was cut, I used the spray adhesive to mount it on the cork board. Piece of advice, make sure your laptop or anything else of importance aren't close by once you begin spraying! It's a little tricky to get the cork board to stay flat and get the map to go on smooth. You'll get the hang of it once you start and figure out what way works best for you. Just takes a little trial and error.
Voila! A road map cork board. It's pretty sweet lookin. I put tons of painters tape on the back of the board and stuck it on the basement door into Kev's tool room. It seemed like it was going to stay pretty good.

I've thought about getting some super cool push pins and sticking them on the places in Ohio we've lived, visited, like, etc.  It's a pretty sweet project. I found this idea on design sponge, a little note on the link, it tends to make the computer freeze up. Just so you know. I can't make an entire project without giving credit on where I found it, that wouldn't be right. If the link doesn't work out for you, try going to the main home page and put a search in for road map cork board. Or make up your own idea! You can make a cork board of any object you want. That's the thrilling part of all this. The possibilities are endless.  Make it your own.

  1. I love this idea! Until I saw that you cut it out, I never really noticed the shape of Ohio on the fold-out maps. Sweet! Our family likes to travel and it won't be long before the kids can drive. Decorative and useful.....AWESOME! Thanks for the continued great ideas. Your friend, Heather Enneking
